What to Expect After a Biopsy

Small amounts of bleeding or clear fluid may occur. Apply pressure to the area for 20 minutes. If it doesn’t cease, please attend your GP practice or A&E.

Mild discomfort or tenderness for 1–2 days is normal.

Redness and swelling are common and should subside in a few days.

A scab will usually form over the site and fall off naturally within 1–2 weeks.

Stitches are dissolvable and should dissolve within 2–3 weeks. If they do not, your GP can be contacted to arrange removal.

Wound Care Instructions

Keep the Area Clean and Dry (First 24–48 Hours)

Leave the original dressing in place for 24–48 hours unless otherwise advised.

Do not soak the area (no swimming, hot tubs, or long baths).

Cleaning the Wound (After 24–48 Hours)

Gently wash the area with mild soap and water.

Pat dry with the sterile gauze provided to you.

Ensure you apply any topical treatments prescribed to you.

Cover with a sterile bandage or non-stick dressing daily.

If You Have Stitches:

Avoid heavy lifting, stretching, or vigorous exercise near the site.

Keep the area dry and covered.

Do not apply any treatments to the area unless advised otherwise.

Signs to Watch For (Seek medical advice if noticed)

Increasing redness, warmth, swelling, or pus.

Pain that worsens rather than improves.

Fever or chills.

Bleeding that doesn’t stop with gentle pressure.

Signs of allergic reaction (rash, itching, swelling).
