How Are Scars Diagnosed?

Scars are often diagnosed based on their appearance and the patient’s medical history. A healthcare provider may perform a physical examination to evaluate the scar’s size, texture, and color. In some cases, additional tests like skin biopsies may be necessary to determine the scar’s nature and the best treatment approach.

Clinical Features of Severe Cutaneous Adverse Reactions (SCARs)

SCARs, such as AGEP, DIHS/DRESS, and SJS/TEN, are severe reactions to medications or infections and present specific clinical features:

  • AGEP: Non-follicular sterile pustules on red, swollen skin, often accompanied by fever and neutrophilia.
  • DIHS/DRESS: Rash, solid organ involvement (e.g., liver), fever, lymphadenopathy, and facial edema, with a prolonged course.
  •  SJS/TEN: Prodromal illness with fever, malaise, and mucosal involvement, followed by a painful, itchy rash with flat, flaccid blisters.
