Complications

Dermatitis arises from a combination of immune system activation, genetics, and environmental triggers:

  • Immune System: Overreacts to small irritants or allergens, causing inflammation.
  • Genetics: Family history of dermatitis increases the likelihood of developing the condition.
  • Environment: Factors like tobacco smoke, air pollutants, and fragrances in skin products can trigger dermatitis.
  • Exposure: Contact with chemicals, irritants, or allergens like poison ivy, perfume, or nickel can cause dermatitis.

Risk Factors

  • Age: Atopic dermatitis is more common in children, while other forms can occur at any age.
  • Family History: Higher risk if family members have dermatitis, hay fever, or asthma.
  • Occupation: Jobs involving chemicals, solvents, or cleaning supplies.
  • Other Health Conditions: Conditions like celiac disease, Parkinson’s disease, and HIV/AIDS can increase the risk of dermatitis.
