Causes
Dermatitis
Dermatitis arises from a combination of immune system activation, genetics, and environmental triggers:
- Immune System: Overreacts to small irritants or allergens, causing inflammation.
- Genetics: Family history of dermatitis increases the likelihood of developing the condition.
- Environment: Factors like tobacco smoke, air pollutants, and fragrances in skin products can trigger dermatitis.
- Exposure: Contact with chemicals, irritants, or allergens like poison ivy, perfume, or nickel can cause dermatitis.
Risk Factors
- Age: Atopic dermatitis is more common in children, while other forms can occur at any age.
- Family History: Higher risk if family members have dermatitis, hay fever, or asthma.
- Occupation: Jobs involving chemicals, solvents, or cleaning supplies.
- Other Health Conditions: Conditions like celiac disease, Parkinson’s disease, and HIV/AIDS can increase the risk of dermatitis.
